You've decided you need a hot oil system in your plant, and now you need to design the components. Or maybe you just need to spec out the hot oil heater or heat exchanger. The first step is selecting the right thermal fluid to use in the system. Once you've selected the right thermal fluid (sometimes called heat transfer fluid - HTF), you will need to figure out the physical properties of the fluid at the temperatures required by the system. But where do you find this information? And how can you compare different fluids?
One way is to go to each thermal fluid vendor and get the information for their fluids. Some have downloadable tools, others only provide information in charts.
At THM, we utilize these thermal fluids and their physical properties in the design of our hot oil heaters. We've created a tool that has all of the properties for many of the most common heat transfer fluids. And we want to share it with you!
